Moo Java is an implementation of 3rd Eye Entertainment's MooAPI using the Sun Microsystems programming
language 'Java'. MooAPI (Multiplayer Online Object) is a group of technologies designed to help you create multiplayer games and online applications. Currently
3rd Eye Entertainment provides implementations of MooAPI for Clickteam's software development tools; Multimedia Fusion and Jamagic.
At this time Moo servers can only really be created with these products and hence currently there is little ability to run servers on operating systems other than Windows.
Gwerdy Software provides a Java version of the MooAPI along with a graphical server using this code.
Java is a cross-platform technology meaning that the Moo servers based on it can run on many computer systems such as Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac
which have had the Java runtime or SDK installed. The code also uses a technology called threads allowing the server to appear to carry out tasks
simultaneously. This should improve server response time (ping) over MMF and Jamagic based servers, although this has not yet been verified.
The server also uses less computer resources than most servers using MMF or Jamagic and only increases CPU usage when it is needed, when no users are connected usage is minimal. Moo Java servers have been
tested on Windows XP and Linux (Debain)
Moo Java and the Moo Java Gwerdy Server are currently undergoing a public testing phase (beta) and so may not contain all the features supported under
MooAPI and could contain bugs! Please report any problems you encounter when testing this product. This version does not support blasting text (UDP) or
features associated with Multimedia Fusion's Moo Game extensions such as server side INI files.
Although this product is aimed at the Multimedia Fusion and Jamagic users community the code can be used in any Java application needing an easy to
use set of classes providing server and client side abilities. MooAPI provides many useful features making it ideal for multiplayer games or applications
such as chat programs or messaging software.
