Gwerdy Wordy (GW) is an freeware application designed to help players on a multitude of word based puzzle games, specifically Scrabble and Literati (Yahoo online game based on scrabble). The program can also help you complete crosswords, find anagrams or simply to check the validity of a word if you are playing against friends and do not want to flick through a dictionary! GW has a separate interface for different types of games as explained below. (Also see the screen captures on the right)

GW's Scrabble / Literati helper allow the user to enter in the letter on your rack, including any blank or wild characters. GW will then quickly check through its dictionary of over 170,000 words to find all possible answers and list these either by length, score (Scrabble or Literati) or alphabetically. The advanced system allows you to also request resultant words start and/or end and/or include a certain combination of letters either from the letter you entered on your rack or as additional letter that may already be on the board. This allows you to find results that will "hook" into words already played. Further more you can set minimum and maximum lengths for results when trying to fit words into a specific space. All this is achieved very quickly with most searches taking a couple of seconds on a modern day PC. With all this power you will be improving you score in no time!

GW's anagram solver simply and quickly finds all words that can be created from using all the letters you answer, while with the crossword helper you can enter the letters you have, replacing unknowns with "?" and GW will tell you all the possible solutions that can fit. GW countdown simply lists all words that can be made from a list of letters listing longer words first for use in games based on the UK Channel 4 game show "Countdown" Finally GW also provides a checking facility, enter a word and find out if the word is valid. Use this if you don't want help finding solutions but would like to quickly solve arguments about the validity of a word.

Clicking GW results opens up a web-page definition of that word using Dictionary.com, you can also append or remove words from the in-built dictionary used by GW.
